About working in Huntsville

Huntsville in practice

Huntsville spans a wider range of housing eras than anywhere else we work, from homes in the historic districts through mid-century ranches to current construction on the city's growing edges.

That range matters for exterior work. A 1950s ranch with original aluminum windows and a 2015 build with builder-grade vinyl need different conversations, and the historic districts carry appearance rules that do not apply elsewhere.

Storm exposure is a constant across all of it. The April 2011 outbreak is the reference point most homeowners here use, and it shaped how seriously this market takes wind and hail resistance.

Four housing eras, four different jobs

Older homes in the historic districts, mid-century ranches, the nineties expansion, and current construction on the edges of the city. Each fails differently and each needs a different conversation.

The ranch stock is where we do the most window work: original single-pane aluminum, frames that conduct heat straight through, and sixty years of humidity behind them. On those homes we budget for sill repair as a matter of course.

Historic districts: plan before you replace

Twickenham, Old Town and Five Points are Huntsville's best-known historic districts, and they are locally designated. In a local historic district, exterior changes such as replacing windows or doors generally need approval from the Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission before a building permit is issued.

The city's guidelines favor repairing original windows and matching the original design and materials when replacement is needed. That is why, on some historic homes, an exterior storm window or a careful repair is the honest recommendation rather than full replacement.

We will tell you plainly what we think the house needs, and what to ask the city before you commit. Check the current requirements with the City of Huntsville's historic preservation office, because the rules are theirs, not ours.

Storm exposure shapes this market

The April 2011 outbreak is where almost every roofing conversation here starts, and it means Huntsville homeowners take wind ratings and documentation more seriously than most.

It also created a cohort. A great many Huntsville roofs were replaced in a narrow window after 2011, and those roofs are now around fifteen years old, the point where granule loss starts showing in this hot-attic climate. Hail bruising is invisible from the ground, so an inspection is worth doing even when nothing looks wrong.

Questions people ask

Do you work in Huntsville's historic districts?

Yes. We re-sided a home in the Five Points historic district with Allura fiber cement shake on the gables and lap siding on the walls, so it kept its character and gained better weather protection. Exterior changes in local historic districts usually need city approval first, so we plan for that.

Do I need approval to replace windows in a Huntsville historic district?

Usually, yes. In Huntsville's local historic districts, exterior changes generally need approval from the Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission before a permit is issued. Replacing only the glass is a common exception. Check with the city's historic preservation office for the current rules.

My roof was done after 2011 and looks fine. Should I have it looked at?

Probably. Hail bruising is invisible from the ground, and a roof that is around fifteen years old in this hot-attic climate is at the age where an inspection is worth doing even when nothing is obviously wrong.

Do you have a Huntsville office?

No. We are based in Madison and work Huntsville from there. We would rather say that than list an address we do not occupy.

Do you charge extra to come to Huntsville?

No. Huntsville is part of our regular weekly area, and we never add travel time to an invoice.

Do you install interior doors or interior windows?

No. We only work on the outside of your home: exterior windows, exterior doors, siding, roofing and washing. We do not install interior doors or interior windows.
