Exterior Storm Windows in North Alabama

A second glass panel in its own frame, fitted on the outside of an existing window. It adds a second air barrier and shields the old window from weather, without replacing it. We install exterior storm windows only.

How it opens

Quick answer

A storm window is a second glass panel fitted on the outside of an existing window. In North Alabama it makes most sense on single-pane windows you are not ready to replace, especially in historic homes where the original sashes should stay. The ACM Pros fit exterior storm windows only.

The details

Who it suits

Historic homes where the original windows must stay, rental property where full replacement is not justified, and any single-pane window you are not ready to replace yet.

When a storm window is the honest recommendation

We will say this plainly because it costs us work: if you have original single-pane windows in a historic district and replacement is restricted, a well-fitted storm window is a real answer, not a consolation prize. It gets you a second air barrier for a fraction of the price of a replacement window that meets the district's rules.

It is also the right call on a property you are selling within a year or two, where the return on full replacement will not arrive before you leave.

Where it falls short

A storm window does not fix a rotted sill, a racked frame (one pushed out of square) or a sash that will not close. It sits outside the problem. If the main window has failed structurally, a storm window covers it rather than solving it.

It also adds a surface to clean and a frame to maintain, and an operable storm window adds a mechanism that can seize.

How it compares

Compared with full replacement, a storm window costs a fraction as much and can be undone, which is exactly why historic districts allow it. Compared with doing nothing, it noticeably cuts the air moving through an old opening. It is not equal to a modern double-pane window, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Why we fit them outside

We install exterior storm windows only. Fitted outside, a storm window protects the original window from rain and sun as well as adding the air barrier. In a historic district, a frame color that matches the original sash helps it blend in from the street.

What to check before you buy

  • That the main window is sound. A storm window will not fix rot or a sash that will not close.
  • Fixed or operable. Operable panels open for fresh air but add a mechanism that can seize.
  • That the bottom edge can drain, so any water that gets in can get out.
  • Whether the opening is square enough to fit without custom work.
  • A frame material and color that suit the house.

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Opening size
  • Fixed versus operable
  • Frame material and finish
  • Glass specification
  • Whether the existing opening is square enough to fit without custom work

Questions people ask

Are storm windows worth fitting?

On a single-pane window you are not ready to replace, yes. They add a second air barrier for a fraction of the cost of replacement. On a modern double-pane window, the gain is too small to bother.

Do they work on historic homes?

That is their strongest case. Exterior storm windows let the original sashes stay in place, which matters where the windows are part of the architecture or subject to appearance review.

Do you install interior storm panels?

No. ACM installs exterior storm windows only. Fitted outside, a storm window protects the original window from weather as well as adding the air barrier.

Will a storm window fix a rotted sill or a sash that will not close?

No. A storm window sits outside the problem. If the main window has failed structurally, a storm window covers it rather than solving it, and repair or replacement is the honest answer.

Fixed or operable: which should I choose?

Fixed panels are simpler and have nothing to wear out. Operable panels let you open the window for air, but they add a mechanism that can seize and a little more to maintain.

Is a storm window worth it if I am selling soon?

Often, yes. On a property you plan to sell within a year or two, the return on full replacement may not arrive before you leave, and a storm window is the sensible middle ground.

Do you install interior windows or doors?

No. We work only on the outside of your home: exterior windows, exterior storm windows and exterior doors. We do not install interior windows or interior doors, and we do no interior remodeling.
