Exterior Window Shutters

Exterior shutters, decorative or working, mounted on either side of a window.

Exterior windows and doors only. We do not install interior doors or interior windows.

How it opens

Quick answer

Exterior window shutters are panels mounted on each side of a window, either decorative or working shutters that actually close. They suit traditional homes and walls where the windows look small or sparse. In North Alabama's humidity, how they are mounted matters most: they need a gap behind them so water can drain.

The details

Who it suits

Homes where the windows look too small or too sparse for the wall, and traditional styles where shutters are part of the look. Shutters are one of the quickest ways to change how the front of a house reads from the street.

How it compares

Shutters are purely a decision about how the outside of your home looks, with one rule that gets broken constantly: a pair of shutters should look as though it could close over the window. Shutters that are too narrow are the fastest way to make a good-looking house look cheap.

Decorative panels are the most common. Working shutters still exist, still close, and on a historic home they may be required.

In this climate

Exterior shutters in this climate are either looked after, or they become the thing that holds water against your siding. Mounted flat with no drainage gap, they trap moisture behind the panel, and on a wood or fiber cement wall that is where rot starts.

Decorative or working, the mounting matters more than the panel itself: standoffs, which are small spacers that hold the panel off the wall, a clear drainage gap, and fasteners that will not stain the siding as they age.

Getting the size and style right

Each shutter in a pair should be about half the width of the window, so together they would cover it if closed. They should also run the full height of the window, from the top trim to the sill.

Louvered shutters, with angled slats, suit most traditional homes. Raised or flat panel shutters give a heavier, more formal look, and board-and-batten styles suit farmhouse and craftsman homes.

How to tell if yours need replacing

It is worth checking the siding behind any old flat-mounted shutter, because hidden damage often starts there. These are the signs that it is time.

  • Cracked, warped or badly faded panels.
  • Shutters screwed flat to the wall with no gap behind them.
  • Rust streaks or stains running down the siding from the fasteners.
  • Soft or discolored siding behind or under a shutter.
  • Panels clearly narrower than half the window.

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Material
  • Size and quantity
  • Louvered versus panel
  • Mounting surface and fastener detail
  • Finish and color matching

Questions people ask

Are shutters purely decorative now?

Mostly, but not always. Working shutters still exist and still close, and on a historic home they may be required rather than optional. Decorative panels are more common and are sized to look as though they would cover the window if closed.

What are they mounted with?

Standoffs, which leave a drainage gap behind the panel, and fasteners chosen so they do not stain the siding as they weather. Panels fixed flat to the wall are the ones we end up removing.

Do shutters need to match the window width?

A decorative pair should look as though it would close over the window, so each shutter is about half the window's width. Panels that are visibly too narrow are the single most common thing that makes a good-looking house look wrong.

Can shutters go on a brick home?

Yes. The mounting surface changes the fasteners and the method, which is one reason it affects the price. On brick the goal is the same as on siding: a secure mount, a gap for drainage, and nothing that will stain.

Do shutters protect windows from storms?

Decorative shutters do not, because they are fixed in place and never close. Working shutters can close over a window, but most shutters chosen today are for looks rather than protection.

Can shutters match my front door or trim color?

Usually, yes. Finish and color matching is one of the items that moves the price, so bring up the colors you want to coordinate with at the free estimate. The finish is named in your written scope.

Do you install interior shutters or plantation shutters?

No. We install exterior shutters on the outside of your home only. We do not install interior shutters, blinds, interior windows or interior doors, and we do no interior remodeling.
