The ACM Pros Exteriors

Picture Windows

A fixed window that does not open. No sash, no hardware, and no seal that can wear out from use.

Exterior windows and doors only. We do not install interior doors or interior windows.

How it opens

Quick answer

A picture window is a large fixed window that does not open, used to frame a view and bring in daylight. It is the most energy-efficient and durable window style because nothing moves. In North Alabama the glass coating matters most, especially on a large window facing south or west.

The details

Who it suits

Homes with a view worth framing, living areas that need more daylight, and openings too large for a window that opens. Picture windows are also often set above or beside windows that do open, joined in one combination unit, so you get the view and the fresh air.

How it compares

The most energy-efficient and most durable choice, precisely because nothing moves. There is no weatherstrip rubbing and no lock pulling a sash tight.

The catch is the sun. On a west-facing wall the glass package matters more on a picture window than on any other style, because a large fixed pane lets in a lot of solar heat.

In this climate

With no sash, no hardware and no seal that wears from use, a fixed window is the most durable choice in a climate that works everything else hard. What can still fail is the edge seal of the insulated glass unit, meaning the two panes sealed together with a gap between them. That depends on the glass package and the heat it takes, not on use.

On a large south or west wall, the coating choice carries the whole job. Get it wrong and you have a very durable window that overheats the room.

Pairing a picture window with windows that open

A picture window gives light and view, but no air. Pairing it with windows that open solves that. Common pairings are a casement on each side, or an awning window underneath that can stay open in light rain. Whether your window is part of a combination unit is one of the things that moves the price, so decide the layout at the estimate.

Choosing the right size and glass

Picture windows can go larger than any window that opens, because there is no sash weight or hardware to carry. Large units need thicker glass and stronger frames, and the weight of the glass and getting it to the opening become the practical limits.

For glass, Low-E, a thin, invisible coating that reflects heat, is the baseline. On an unshaded south or west wall, ask about a coating made for solar control. On an exposed wall, ask about glass thickness and impact rating, since hail is a real risk in this region.

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Overall size (large units need thicker glass and stronger frames)
  • Glass package and solar control coating
  • Frame material
  • Whether it is part of a combination unit
  • Access and installation difficulty

Questions people ask

Do picture windows save energy?

They lose less air than any window that opens, because there is nothing to leak through. Whether they lower your cooling bill depends on the glass coating. A large, unshaded west-facing picture window with the wrong glass will cost you more than it saves.

Can a picture window be opened later?

No. Turning a fixed window into one that opens means a new window in a new frame. It is worth deciding at measuring, not afterward.

What size can they go to?

Larger than any style that opens, because there is no sash weight or hardware to carry. The weight of the glass and access to the opening become the practical limits, not the window itself.

Is a picture window a good choice for a bedroom?

Not as the only window. A bedroom needs a window that opens, both for fresh air and as an emergency exit. A picture window paired with a casement or double-hung works well, and in living rooms a picture window on its own is common.

Will fog between the panes clear up?

No. Fog or moisture between the panes means the edge seal of the glass unit has failed and damp air is getting in. It does not clear on its own, the glass no longer insulates as it should, and it is one of the most common reasons people replace a picture window.

How do I clean the outside of a large picture window?

Since it does not open or tilt, the outside is cleaned from outside. On a ground-floor window a hose and a squeegee on a pole handle most of it. For a picture window high on a wall, think about how you will reach it before choosing that spot.

Do you install interior windows or interior glass?

No. We replace exterior windows only, the ones in your home's outside walls. We do not install interior windows, interior glass or interior doors, and we do no remodeling inside.
