Awning Windows

Hinged at the top and opening outward from the bottom, so the open sash forms a small canopy over the opening.

Exterior windows and doors only. We do not install interior doors or interior windows.

How it opens

Quick answer

An awning window is hinged at the top and swings outward from the bottom, so the open sash sheds rain like a small roof. It is the only common style you can leave open in light rain, which is useful in a North Alabama summer. It works best high on a wall, over a kitchen counter, in a bathroom, or below a picture window.

The details

Who it suits

Bathrooms, spots above kitchen counters, and high on a wall where you want fresh air with privacy. Also any opening you would like to leave open in light rain.

Awnings pair well under a fixed picture window, where the picture window gives the view and the awning gives the airflow.

How it compares

The only common style that lets air in reliably during rain, which is genuinely useful in a climate with frequent summer storms. It seals nearly as well as a casement.

The opening is smaller than a casement's, and awnings are rarely sized to serve as an emergency exit.

In this climate

An awning can stay open through the light summer showers this region gets, because the sash forms a canopy over its own opening. That is the whole argument for it here. It also uses a compression seal like a casement, pressing tight against the frame, so it holds up well against humidity and pollen.

The limit is projection. The sash swings out from the bottom, so it cannot sit where anyone walks beneath it.

Choosing the right size and spot

Because an awning opens from the bottom, placement matters more than with most styles. High on a wall, it lets air in while blocking the view in, which is why it is popular for bathrooms. Over a kitchen counter, a crank is easier to reach than a sash you have to lift.

Wide, short shapes suit awnings best, since a tall sash sticks out further and catches more wind when open. Make sure the open sash will clear shrubs, deck rails and downspouts.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • What grade of crank and hinge hardware is quoted, and does it resist corrosion in our humidity?
  • Is it a single window or part of a combination with a picture window?
  • Will the open sash clear walkways, decks and plantings?
  • Is the glass Low-E, and is frosted privacy glass an option for a bathroom?
  • Is the price per opening, with materials named in writing?

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Size
  • Frame material
  • Crank and hinge hardware
  • Glass package
  • Whether it is combined into a multi-unit assembly

Questions people ask

Can I really leave an awning window open in rain?

In light rain, yes. That is what the shape is for. In a wind-driven storm, no window should be open, and an awning is no exception.

Where do awning windows work best?

High on a wall for fresh air with privacy, above a kitchen counter, and in bathrooms. They also pair well under a fixed picture window, where the picture window gives the view and the awning gives the airflow.

Do they seal as tightly as a casement?

Close to it. Both press against the frame when closed instead of sliding past it. That means both seal better than styles that run in a track.

Can an awning window be an emergency exit?

Rarely. The open sash leaves a smaller clear opening than a casement, and awnings usually sit high on a wall. For a bedroom that needs an emergency exit, a casement or double-hung is usually the better choice.

Will the open sash get in the way outside?

It can. The sash swings out from the bottom, so it should not sit where people walk underneath or where it would hit a deck rail or shrubs. Clearance is one of the things we check when we measure.

Do awning windows need much upkeep?

Less than a slider, because there is no track to fill with pollen. Keep the crank and hinges clean and check that the weatherstrip is not cracked. If the crank gets stiff, the operator, which is the crank mechanism, is a replaceable part.

Do you install interior windows or do inside work?

No. We replace exterior windows only, the ones in your home's outside walls. We do not install interior windows or interior doors, and we do no interior remodeling.
