The ACM Pros Exteriors

Casement Windows

A single sash hinged at the side that cranks outward like a door. As it closes, the sash pulls tight against the frame, which is why casements seal so well.

Exterior windows and doors only. We do not install interior doors or interior windows.

How it opens

Quick answer

A casement window is hinged on one side, opens outward with a crank, and presses tight against its frame when closed. It is the best-sealing common window style, which makes it a strong choice for exposed south and west walls in North Alabama. It is not a good fit where the open sash would swing over a walkway, patio or path.

At a glance

How it opens

Best for
Over a kitchen sink, breezy walls, and anywhere sealing matters most.
Watch for
The open sash sticks out from the wall and can catch strong wind.
Upkeep
Keep the crank and hinges clean. They are the parts that wear.

The details

Who it suits

Kitchens over a sink, where pushing a sash up is a stretch and turning a crank is easy. Walls that catch the prevailing breeze. Anywhere keeping air out is the priority.

Casements also make sense for a bedroom or basement window that has to double as an emergency exit, because the whole sash swings clear of the opening.

How it compares

The best sealer among common styles, and the best at catching a side breeze, because the open sash works like a scoop. The trade-offs are that it sticks out from the wall when open, and the crank is one more part that can wear.

Compared with a double-hung, a casement is tighter but will not take a window air conditioner without modification, and it usually costs more because of the crank and hinge hardware.

In this climate

The compression seal is why we recommend casements on exposed south and west walls. It is the tightest common style, and it holds that seal through the daily heating and cooling this region puts on a frame. It also seals against spring pollen instead of collecting it, because there is no track to fill.

The crank and hinges are the parts that wear, and in this humidity they should be a corrosion-resistant grade, not the base hardware.

Where not to put a casement

An open casement is a sail. On a wall that takes the wind from storm fronts, we fit limiters, which are stops that keep the sash from opening too far. We do not put casements where the open sash would swing over a walkway, a patio, deck steps or the path to a gate, because sooner or later someone walks into it. In those spots a double-hung or a slider is the safer choice.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • What grade of crank and hinge is quoted? That is usually where a cheap casement is cheap.
  • Is the hardware corrosion resistant for our humidity?
  • Will the open sash clear walkways, shrubs, downspouts and deck rails?
  • Does this window need to meet egress, the code size for an emergency exit?
  • Is the price per opening, with the window, frame material and glass named in writing?

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Sash size (large casements need heavier hardware)
  • Frame material
  • Hinge and crank grade
  • Glass package
  • Screen type

Questions people ask

Will the open sash catch wind?

Yes, and it is a real limit, not a footnote. An open casement acts like a sail. On a wall that takes storm-front wind we specify limiters, and we do not put casements where the sash would swing over a walkway, a patio or a path to a gate.

How often does the crank fail?

The crank, called the operator, is the most common repair item on a casement. It is a replaceable part, not a failed window. Ask what operator grade is quoted, because that is usually where a cheap casement is cheap.

Do casements meet egress in a small opening?

Usually more easily than a double-hung. Egress means an opening large enough to climb out of in an emergency, and a casement's whole sash swings clear instead of only half the opening. For a basement or upstairs bedroom window, that often makes casement the practical answer, not just the stylish one.

Can I put a window air conditioner in a casement?

Not without modification. A window unit needs a sash that slides, so double-hung is the style to choose for a room you cool that way.

Will casements lower my power bill?

They are the tightest-sealing common style, so they cut air leaks. How much that shows on your bill also depends on the glass, your insulation, your ductwork and your thermostat habits. That is why we will not put a percentage on it.

Do casements cost more than double-hung windows?

Usually, yes, because of the crank and hinge hardware. The gap changes with size, frame material and glass. We price each opening after measuring, so you see the exact difference on your written estimate.

Do you replace interior windows too?

No. We work only on exterior windows, the ones in your home's outside walls. We do not install interior windows or doors, and we do no interior remodeling.
