Aluminum Replacement Windows in North Alabama

Aluminum frames are strong and slim. They are also what most of the region's failing original windows are made from.

Quick answer

Old aluminum windows are one of the most common reasons North Alabama homeowners call us, and for most homes the best replacement is vinyl or fiberglass. New aluminum makes sense only with a thermal break, an insulating strip built into the frame, and mainly for large openings, commercial work or modern designs where a slim frame is the point.

The details

Who it suits

Large openings, commercial work, and modern homes where a slim frame is the point. The strength of aluminum lets you carry more glass with less frame.

How it compares

Modern aluminum with a thermal break is a legitimate choice for large or contemporary openings. Aluminum without a thermal break belongs in commercial work.

If your house has its original aluminum windows and they fog, bind or sweat, that is the material doing what it does. It is not a maintenance failure.

What a thermal break is

A thermal break is a strip of insulating material built into an aluminum frame. It separates the outer and inner parts of the frame so heat cannot pass straight through the metal.

Without one, the frame carries summer heat right through and can sweat with condensation. Aluminum with a thermal break is a different product from the aluminum windows most older homes have.

Why old aluminum windows fail

The frame expands and contracts far more than the glass it holds. Over decades, that movement breaks the seal where the sashes meet and at the edge of the double-pane glass. Many older units are single-pane, so they let heat straight through as well.

A great deal of the housing across Madison and Huntsville still has its original aluminum windows. That is not urgent in the way a rotted sill is urgent, but replacing them is the single change that most reliably improves comfort in an older home here.

Replacing original aluminum windows

For most homes, the right replacement for original aluminum is vinyl, with fiberglass on the sunniest walls if the budget allows.

Whether each opening gets an insert or a full-frame installation depends on what we find at measuring. If the frame around the old unit is sound, square and dry, an insert works. If there is rot or water staining at the sill, full-frame (removing everything back to the framed opening) is the only lasting answer. The old frames leave with us the same day.

What to check before you buy new aluminum

  • A thermal break, stated in the quote.
  • The finish: painted, or anodized (a hard protective layer formed on the metal).
  • The glass package, with Low-E glass and an argon fill as a baseline.
  • The structural needs of large spans, so the frame is sized for the glass it carries.

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Opening size
  • Thermal break specification
  • Finish and anodizing
  • Glass package
  • Structural requirements on large spans

Questions people ask

Is aluminum a bad choice for a house here?

Without a thermal break, yes. Aluminum conducts heat readily and moves a lot as temperatures change, which is exactly why so many of the region's failing original windows are aluminum. Units with a thermal break are a different product.

Where does aluminum still make sense?

Large openings and commercial work, where its strength carries more glass with less frame, and modern homes where a slim frame is the design goal.

Why do old aluminum windows fog and draft?

The frame expands and contracts far more than the glass it holds. Over decades, that movement breaks the seal where the sashes meet and at the edge of the glass unit. It is how the material behaves, not neglect.

What should replace my old aluminum windows?

For most homes, vinyl, with fiberglass on sunny south and west walls if the budget allows. Aluminum with a thermal break is worth considering for very large openings or a modern look. We show you the options at the free estimate.

Can fog between the panes be fixed?

No. Fog between the panes means the edge seal has failed and moist air is getting in. The glass unit or the window has to be replaced, and defogging services do not restore the seal.

Will new windows make my home more comfortable?

Replacing original single-pane aluminum is the single change that most reliably improves comfort in an older home here. We will not put a percentage on power savings, because that depends on your insulation, ducts and thermostat as much as on the windows.

Do you install interior windows or doors?

No. We replace exterior windows, the windows in your home's outside walls, and install exterior doors. We do not install interior windows or interior doors, and we do no interior remodeling.
