Fiberglass Replacement Windows in North Alabama

Fiberglass frames are made by pulling glass fibers through resin. They expand and shrink at close to the same rate as the glass they hold, more closely than any other common frame material.

Exterior windows and doors only. We do not install interior doors or interior windows.

Quick answer

Fiberglass windows are worth the extra cost in North Alabama on sunny south and west walls and on large openings. Because the frame moves with the glass through daily heat swings, the seal around the glass spends its life under less stress, and the frame can be painted later. On shaded walls, vinyl is usually the better buy.

The details

Who it suits

Homes with exposed south and west walls, large openings, and owners planning to stay long enough for longevity to matter.

It is also a good fit if you want a dark frame, or think you may want to change the color one day.

How it compares

The real argument is thermal cycling: the heating and cooling a window goes through every day. When the frame and the glass expand at similar rates, the edge seal of the double-pane glass spends its life under less stress. Edge seal failure is what puts fog between your panes. In a climate with wide daily swings, that is a durability case, not marketing.

Against vinyl, fiberglass costs more and earns it on exposure. On a shaded north wall the case is weaker, and vinyl is usually the better buy. Against wood, it needs far less upkeep in this humidity.

Fiberglass in this climate

South and west walls take the most sun, heat and UV, and they are where seals and finishes fail first. That is where fiberglass earns its price.

A dark exterior color does not carry the same warping risk it does on vinyl, so fiberglass is the safer choice if you want dark frames on a sunny wall. Pair it with Low-E glass (a thin coating that reflects heat) and an argon fill, with the coating chosen for the direction each wall faces.

You can mix fiberglass and vinyl

You do not have to choose one material for the whole house. A sensible way to spend a fixed budget is vinyl on most walls and fiberglass on the exposed south and west sides. Because we price per opening, you can see exactly what that mix costs before you decide.

What to check before you buy

  • The product line and glass package are named in the quote.
  • The frame color and finish, and whether you can repaint it later.
  • Insert or full-frame for each opening, and why.
  • Which openings sit on your sunniest walls, since that is where fiberglass pays off.
  • Trim and haul-away are included in the price.

What affects the price

We price after measuring, line by line, with the materials named. These are the things that move the number.

  • Opening size
  • Glass package
  • Frame color and finish
  • Insert or full-frame installation
  • Whether the opening needs frame repair

Questions people ask

Is fiberglass worth the extra over vinyl?

On exposed south and west walls and on large openings, often yes. It expands at close to the same rate as the glass it holds, so the edge seal spends its life under less stress. On a shaded wall the case is weaker.

Can fiberglass be painted?

Yes, which is the other practical advantage over vinyl. The color is not locked in when you buy, and a dark exterior does not carry the same warping risk.

How long does it last?

Longer than vinyl in this climate, based on how the two behave through daily heat swings. We would rather talk about where it earns its price than quote a lifespan figure we cannot stand behind.

Can I use fiberglass on some windows and vinyl on others?

Yes. Fiberglass on the sunny south and west walls and vinyl elsewhere is a sensible way to spend a fixed budget. We price per opening, so you can see exactly what the mix costs.

Is fiberglass a good choice for large windows?

Yes. Large openings are one of its strengths, because the frame stays stable while carrying more glass. A big picture window on a sunny wall is a good example.

Does fiberglass need much maintenance?

Not much. As with any window here, clear the weep holes and tracks twice a year around pollen season, and check the outside sealant joint once a year.

Do you install interior windows or doors?

No. We replace exterior windows, the windows in your home's outside walls, and install exterior doors. We do not install interior windows or interior doors, and we do no interior remodeling.
